Drugs and Alcohol

A drug is any chemical substance natural or synthetic which alters the structure or function of the body.

Medical specialists rate alcohol abuse as the fourth major health problem in Australia. It also is a contributing factor to many accidents that occur in workplaces.

What problems occur when alcohol is mixed with work:

• Increased risk of accidents to self and others
• Impaired reactions, timing and judgement
• Reduced perception of danger
• Mood changes
• Conflict with work mates
• Reduced or poor work performance
• Lower quality and quantity of work
• Poor judgement and decisions
• Inability to concentrate
• Lack of co-ordination
• Decline in physical and mental performance
